2023 NYC Pride Parade – Celebrating Diversity and New LGBTQ+ Protections

NEW YORK CITY, NY – The 2023 New York City Pride Parade took place yesterday, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world. The parade route began at 25th Street and 5th Avenue, winding its way down to Greenwich Village, a historical center for the LGBTQ+ community in New York City.
Leading the parade were this year’s grand marshals: Billy Porter, Yasmin Benoit, AC Dumlao, Hope Giselle, and Randy Wicker. These individuals were celebrated for their notable contributions to the LGBTQ+ community and served as symbols of resilience and pride.
Before the start of the 2023 Pride Parade, Governor Kathy Hochul signed several groundbreaking bills aimed at protecting and affirming the LGBTQ+ community. These new laws establish New York as a “safe haven” for trans youth by safeguarding their health information and shielding medical professionals. Additionally, the legislation ensures the right to receive addiction treatment based on gender identity and updates outdated terminology in state documents, reaffirming New York’s commitment to equality and inclusivity.

The parade, full of colorful floats, energetic marching bands, and representatives from various organizations, embodied the theme “Unapologetically Us,” emphasizing the importance of self-expression and pride in one’s identity. Attendees showed their support by waving rainbow flags and cheering as the procession made its way through the city.
In addition to the main parade, related events such as PrideFest and the Pride Island Music Festival going on throughout the day contributed to the pride-filled atmosphere. PrideFest, located along 4th Avenue, featured vendors, entertainers, and family-friendly activities. Meanwhile, Pride Island at Pier 97 attracted crowds with performances from renowned musical artists, creating a lively waterfront party.
Various organizations and groups played a significant role in the event, highlighting their support for LGBTQ+ rights. Notable participants included SAG-AFTRA, Playbill, The Barbie Movie, the Human Rights Campaign, and The Walt Disney Company. Their presence underscored the broad-based support for the LGBTQ+ community across different sectors.

The parade also honored the legacy of the Stonewall Riots, commemorating its 54th anniversary. This historical event is credited with sparking the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, and its impact was woven throughout the day’s activities.
Safety was a major priority, with organizers working closely with the NYPD to ensure a secure and peaceful event. Enhanced security measures were in place, and the day concluded without any significant incidents.
Ultimately, the 2023 New York City Pride Parade was not just a celebration; it was a demonstration of resilience and solidarity. As the rainbow flags are put away and New York City returns to its usual pace, the spirit of Pride remains, inspiring advocacy for equality and inclusion in the year ahead.
