Ham Radio Open House Showcases Technology, Satellites and Emergency Communications

From weather balloons to International Space Station communications, the event introduced visitors to the growing technology and educational opportunities within amateur radio.

The Suffolk County Radio Club held it’s annual open house at their facility in Yaphank on Sunday, April 19th. Vice President Ed Wilson, N2XDD, walks us through what amateur radio is, and all the event has to offer. Members of the club provided visitors with live demonstrations of amateur satellite communications, NOAA satellite imaging, and various software-defined radios including an experiment with satellite communications. Attendees learned how amateur radio fits into modern technology and how it is an excellent medium for teaching and learning STEM education. The club also highlights scholarship opportunities through the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that award over $1 million annually to students who are licensed amateur radio operators.
